Local artists share their inspiration
Art at Hardesty Park spurred by life events.
written by Jim Camey
Every picture has a story. At two booths next to each other at the Akron Arts Expo at Hardesty Park, pictures told
stories of two artists and two tales of happenstance, life-changing events and artistic talent.

Next to Thurman's booth, Kati Russell of Norton had her own story to tell -- one of asthma, a hot tub, and angelic
visions.
Russell, was a sculptor before having an asthma attach in a hot tub at her home in February 1996.
She said the attach came on suddenly.
"I couldn't cry for help," she said.
She said she experienced her spirit leaving her body and found herself floating above the outdoor hot tub.
"I was wrapped in a blanket of love and peace," she said.
She said she saw her late father and one of her favorite dogs.
A friend arrived at about the same time and found Russell in the tub and rescued her.
"I was back," she said, explaining that afterward: "I was drawn to angels."
But it wasn't until Christmas 1998 that she began to draw angels on her Christmas cards.
After receiving one of the cards, the same friend who had rescued her showed up at her doorstep bearing gifts -- paints and canvases to encourage Russell to begin painting angels.
And so she did.
And when she was painting, she once again felt the same peace and light she felt when she had her near-death experience, she said.
Today, she supports herself and her four children by selling the pictures she paints.
"When I paint, I have no pre-conceived notions," she said. "It flows."
This fall her book entitled Divine Images with 50 of her paintings will be released by Angelus Publishing.
Her pictures can be seen at www.katirussell.com
